Practical Tools for Planning and Preparedness
UK Prepared’s home resilience resources are designed to turn broad preparedness advice into practical household decisions. Use checklists to see what you already have, calculators to work out quantities or likely runtimes, and planning tools to record information you may need during a power cut, water outage or other disruption. The aim is proportionate preparation rather than buying equipment for its own sake. Start with the risks most relevant to your home, then build from there as time, budget and storage space allow.
Need Help Getting Started? Start HereHow to Use These Resources
A useful household resilience plan starts with the basics: knowing how your home uses energy and water, understanding what would stop working during an outage, keeping sensible emergency supplies and deciding which services or devices matter most. A flat, rural property, rented home and larger family house can have very different priorities, so these tools are intended to help you make your own decisions rather than follow a one-size-fits-all checklist.
Use the resources to work through practical questions such as how much drinking water to store, what should be in a home emergency kit, how long a backup battery might run a particular device and where your biggest opportunities to reduce electricity use are. Some resources are designed for occasional planning, while others are useful to keep bookmarked or printed so they are available when normal services are interrupted.
For wider emergency planning, the UK Government’s Prepare guidance covers household plans, useful contact information, emergency supplies and support that may be available during disruption. For everyday energy resilience, Energy Saving Trust’s Energy at Home guidance covers heating, insulation, renewable energy, battery storage and practical energy-efficiency improvements.
Use this section alongside UK Prepared’s Advice and Buying Guides. Advice explains what to do and why, while buying guides help compare equipment when a purchase is genuinely useful. The resources here are the working tools: checklists, calculators, reference material and planning aids that help you make decisions, record useful information and build resilience steadily. New resources will be added as the site expands across power, heating, water, food, communications and lower-dependency living.
